In deciding to now do my reading on Jesus' words only, I am finding that Jesus did not mince words.
Matthew 5:21 through 5:26 Jesus talks on Anger and reconciliation.
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment. But I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment; and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar and there remembered that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly wiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.
Don't kill
Don't utter a term of reproach and contempt (Raca) to your brother
Don't call your brother a fool
Make peace
As we know, niceness (a bit of sugar) goes a long way compared to (vinegar). :)

Such an interesting Bible study - to just focus on the words of Jesus. I must do that sometime.
ReplyDeleteMatthew 5 is such a challenge to my definitions of righteousness. Like the Pharisees, I can sometimes define it in ways that don't go all the way to the heart, but Jesus has set forth for us an exceeding righteousness that challenges and requires the Spirit of God for the handing over of a cloak to the one who has taken my tunic.
ReplyDeleteJesus surely did not mince words. And you brought it down to simply two words - make peace.
ReplyDeleteI live in a community that includes many Amish members. I look to them as a good example of peace making. Their ability to forgive and make peace is inspiring and uplifting.
ReplyDeleteAnd my mom always used to say to me "Laurie, you will catch more flies with sugar than with vinegar"! :)
The words of Jesus are so straight forward and yet they are not always easy to follow. This verse, of course, is very easy to follow though.
ReplyDeleteWhen our small group studied the Sermon on the Mount I was reminded how much Jesus emphasized the importance of our heart condition. He gave no excuses for holding on to ugly attitudes!
ReplyDeleteLovely words.
ReplyDeleteAs much as it be possible, we are to live in peace. Some people just won't and we shouldn't mince words either. Leaving you a poem today about peace, don't let people take it. His peace from John 14:27 is priceless. thanks, Pat.
ReplyDeleteSo true. Our Lord truly spoke truth - even unpopular truths all the time. I am so enjoying reading at how the LORD is working in your life as you go through your study on the words of Jesus.
